Specialized care for your changing body throughout pregnancy
Pregnancy is beautiful, but it can also place new demands on your body. As your baby grows, changes in posture, weight distribution, sleep and daily movement can contribute to tension through the back, hips, legs, neck and shoulders.
At Lilies Healing Hands Massage & Body Work, prenatal massage is more than simply a relaxing massage during pregnancy. Each session is thoughtfully adapted to your stage of pregnancy, how your body is changing and what you are experiencing that day.
For more than 10 years, we have had the privilege of caring for mothers throughout pregnancy, postpartum and motherhood.
Prenatal massage is available from 12–40+ weeks at our Frisco and Carrollton locations, with select in-home appointments available throughout the DFW area.
How Can Prenatal Massage Support You?
As pregnancy progresses, your body continually adapts to make room for your growing baby. Prenatal massage provides nurturing, pregnancy specific bodywork to help you feel more comfortable through those changes.
Depending on your individual needs, prenatal massage may help support:
Pregnancy-related muscle tension and soreness
Lower-back and hip discomfort
Neck, shoulder and upper-back tension
Tired or achy legs and feet
Sciatic-area discomfort associated with muscular tension
General feelings of heaviness and fatigue
Relaxation and stress reduction
Rest and overall well-being
Most importantly, your massage gives you dedicated time to slow down, rest and receive care while your body is doing the extraordinary work of growing your baby.
How Often Should You Get a Prenatal Massage?
You don't have to wait until you're uncomfortable to begin caring for your changing body.
For an uncomplicated pregnancy, we generally recommend creating a consistent prenatal massage routine and increasing the frequency as your pregnancy progresses.
12–20 Weeks
Every 3–4 weeks
During the early second trimester, we begin supporting your body as pregnancy-related changes become more noticeable.
Sessions may focus on the neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back and hips, depending on what you're experiencing.
20–30 Weeks
Every 2–3 weeks
As your belly grows and your center of gravity changes, you may begin noticing more tension through your lower back, hips, glutes, legs and shoulders.
More consistent massage during this stage can help support your comfort as your body continues adapting.
30–36 Weeks
Every 1–2 weeks
The third trimester often brings greater physical demands.
Sessions become increasingly focused on areas carrying additional tension, including the lower back, hips, glutes, legs, feet, neck and shoulders, while continuing to encourage relaxation and comfortable movement.
36–40+ Weeks
Weekly
During the final weeks, many mothers benefit from weekly prenatal massage.
Your sessions focus on comfort, relaxation, mobility and releasing muscular tension as your body prepares for birth.
If you reach 39 weeks and are interested in additional birth-preparation support, you can also learn about our specialized Labor Preparation & Natural Labor Induction Massage.
Your Massage Changes as Your Pregnancy Changes
One of the things that makes specialized prenatal massage different from a regular massage is that your session evolves with your pregnancy.
At 16 weeks, your body may need something completely different than it will at 32 or 39 weeks.
Earlier in pregnancy, we may spend more time addressing the neck, shoulders and upper back.
As baby grows, we commonly begin incorporating more work around the lower back, hips, glutes, legs and feet.
And during the final weeks, your session becomes increasingly centered around comfort, mobility, relaxation and helping your body release accumulated muscular tension.
There isn't one prenatal massage routine that every mother receives.
We meet your body where it is that day.
What to Expect During Your Prenatal Massage
Your comfort and safety are always our priority.
Before your session begins, your therapist will check in with you about:
How many weeks pregnant you are • How you've been feeling • Areas of discomfort • Changes since your last appointment • Your comfort level • Any recommendations or restrictions from your prenatal healthcare provider
As pregnancy progresses, supportive pillows and bolsters are used to position your body comfortably and safely.
Your therapist then customizes the massage based on your stage of pregnancy and your needs that day.
And if something doesn't feel comfortable, we change it.
Pregnancy is already asking enough of your body your massage should feel like a place where you can finally rest.
Is Prenatal Massage Safe?
Prenatal massage can be appropriate for many healthy pregnancies when performed by a massage therapist trained in pregnancy-specific care.
At Lilies Healing Hands, prenatal sessions begin at 12 weeks of pregnancy.
If you have a high-risk pregnancy, pregnancy complications, significant medical concerns, new or unexplained symptoms, or your prenatal healthcare provider has placed restrictions on your activities, we may ask you to consult your OB/GYN or midwife before receiving massage.
Massage is complementary wellness care and does not replace prenatal medical care.
Prenatal Massage at Home in DFW
Sometimes the last thing a pregnant mama wants to do is get back into the car after finally getting comfortable.
For select clients and locations, we offer in-home prenatal massage throughout the DFW area.
We bring the massage table and necessary supplies to you so you can enjoy your session in the comfort of your home and when we're finished, you can simply rest.
In-home availability and travel fees vary by location.
Preparing for Birth
As you approach the final weeks of pregnancy, prenatal massage can become part of the way you intentionally prepare your body and mind for birth.
Beginning at 39 weeks, eligible mothers may choose our 90-minute Labor Preparation & Natural Labor Induction Massage, which combines late-pregnancy massage with gentle techniques intended to encourage relaxation and support the body's natural preparation for labor.
No massage technique can guarantee that labor will begin. Baby and body ultimately determine when birth happens.
Frequently Asked Questions
When can I start prenatal massage?
At Lilies Healing Hands, we begin prenatal massage at 12 weeks of pregnancy.
How often should I come?
For an uncomplicated pregnancy, a general schedule is every 3–4 weeks during the early second trimester, every 2–3 weeks as pregnancy progresses, every 1–2 weeks during the early third trimester, and weekly during the final weeks.
Your individual schedule may be different depending on how you're feeling and your pregnancy.
Do I have to lie on my stomach?
No. We use pregnancy-appropriate positioning, pillows and bolsters to keep you supported and comfortable as your pregnancy progresses.
Can prenatal massage help with sciatica?
Massage may help address muscular tension around the lower back, glutes and hips that can contribute to sciatic-area discomfort, but sciatica can have different causes. Persistent, severe or new neurological symptoms should be evaluated by your healthcare provider.
Can prenatal massage start labor?
Regular prenatal massage is primarily intended to support comfort and relaxation.
Beginning at 39 weeks, we offer a separate Labor Preparation & Natural Labor Induction Massage. Even then, massage cannot guarantee that labor will begin.
Can I get a massage if I have a high-risk pregnancy?
Possibly, but it depends on your individual circumstances. We may request clearance or guidance from your OB/GYN or midwife before your appointment.
